Sounds of Summer 2011

TysonAs the temperature starts to dip, the rain sets in and you get the feeling that the summer is almost over – do not despair. There are another three weeks of the school holidays left so why not get yourself back into the summer groove by listening to these hand picked tracks from the likes of Tyson, The Death Set and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Enjoy!

Tyson

I first stumbled across the mysterious London based Tyson on SoundCloud. Apparently Tyson has created a buzz on the blog and DJ circuits with his disco pop singles, and from listening to his tracks Die On The Dancefloor, Out Of My Mind and Love’s On The Line, it’s easy to see why. A fresh concoction of 80′s sounds, catchy lyrics, falsetto vocals and tight production; his music sounds like something straight out of Beverly Hills Cop at times but cooler and with more depth. Almost nothing like Beverly Hills Cop then!

The Death Set

The Death Set are a bit crazy. If you listen to their latest album Michel Poiccard, you’ll probably think ‘what the hell?‘ At times their music can be manic, a bit mental, a collection of strange samples and sounds. However, they do have an energy about them that I like and there are a few cool tracks on the album such as Can You See Straight?, It’s Another Day and Is It The End Again?

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are eight brothers from the south side of Chicago. Musically, they were tutored by their father Philip Cohran with rehearsals taking place at 6 am every morning before the brothers went to school. As they matured the HBE was formed, and the brothers started to mix together their love of Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and hip-hop sensibility with their jazz roots. After busking around Chicago, they transferred to New York and have played with and supported some massive artists across Europe and the US. Their music just makes me smile.
